People recognized the healing properties of lemon balm very early.
The Latin name of lemon balm is Melissa officinalis and it comes from the Greek nymph that saved the life of Zeus. As a sign of gratitude, he turned it into a bee to collect honey from white or yellow flowers of lemon balm.
Lemon balm is a medicinal, fragrant, spicy, aromatic, honey-bearing and industrial plant. For medicine, the leaves are picked before flowering, and the whole plant during flowering. It dries in the shade. Dried lemon balm must not be stored in metal containers.
Blooms from June to September, it is recognizable by its tiny white, whitish-yellow, bluish and pale pink flowers.

It revives and strengthens the heart, cleanses the blood. It is recommended in the treatment of hysteria, hypochondria, menstrual disorders, cramps, bloating, diarrhea, stomach problems, vomiting, bronchial problems and some forms of asthma and all depressive states. Lemon balm leaf, is given to increase appetite, addition to baths against neuralgia and rheumatism. Its antimicrobial effect, especially on herpes viruses, has also been proven.
Lemon balm tea
In two decilitres of boiling water, add a teaspoon of dried lemon balm (or a tablespoon of fresh plant leaves), cover and leave to stand for ten minutes. Strain through a plastic strainer. It should be cooked in an enamel pot or the plant should be poured with hot water in a ceramic cup or glass. Avoid preparation in a metal container. Strain and drink warm or lukewarm. Sweetened with honey, this tea is good against insomnia, fatigue or nervous diseases.
Lemon balm wine
1 l of white wine
A handful of fresh lemon balm
Leave to stand for a week in a closed bottle. Drink 1-1.5 dcl daily.
Lemon balm syrup
350 g of sugar
1 liter of water
2 handfuls of lemon balm (fresh)
Boil sugar in water, immediately add lemon juice and lemon balm leaves. Cover and leave for 24 hours. Strain the syrup into bottles, close well and store in a cool place.
Serve the syrup diluted with water.
3-4 tablespoons of lemon balm leaves
1 dcl 70% alcohol
2 dcl of distilled water
Pour boiling water over the lemon balm leaves and leave covered for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid, add alcohol and shake well.
4 tablespoons dried lemon balm leaves (or 8 tablespoons fresh)
3 dcl of olive oil
Lemon balm oil, used for massage against rheumatism and gout. The bottle is not tightly closed, but only with a piece of cotton wool. Leave to stand in the heat for 4-6 weeks.
